The Word, is a new cultural venue in the heart of South Shields, managed by South Tyneside Council. The Word hosts a series of exhibition spaces, digital and ICT education programmes for schools, audio and video recording studio, café, shop and events space. Celebrating the written word in all its forms The Word is the main library space in South Tyneside.
The next major exhibition, ‘Shiver me Timbers’, the portrayal of pirates in literature, on stage and in film will be installed in May 2017 in the 170m² main exhibition space.
The Word is seeking expressions of interest from artists, outlining how they’ll engage with communities and respond to the theme. An exhibition ‘pod’ (AV enabled and approximately 4mx3m, adjacent to the main exhibition area) has been designated for artists’ responses and will be in place for four to six months. The exhibition must be family friendly and robust as well as creatively engaging.
Working with Cultural Spring Community Champions, a selection group will shortlist up to six artists who will be invited to present to the group on 6th February 2017. One artist will be selected from the proposals and will be awarded up to £20k to deliver the ‘pod’ exhibition. Artists should set out how they will use the resources available.
