New brochure marks our second three years

We’ve produced a brochure looking back on our Phase 2 work, carried out between 2017 and March 2020.

The focus of our activity during Phase 2 turned to new wards in Sunderland and South Tyneside. Our new wards were Hendon, Millfield, Pallion, Sandhill and St Anne’s in Sunderland, and Horsley Hill, Beacon and Bents, Simonside and Rekendyke, Monkton and Bede in South Tyneside.

We continued with our seasonal programme of community art workshops, classes and sessions, as well as delivering large-scale performances and projects such as:

2017:

FIREFLIGHT – a co-commission with the Sunderland MAC Trust, this was a spectacular outdoor performance which opened The Fire Station. More here http://theculturalspring.org.uk/past-events/2017-2/fireflight/

2018:

SET THE SAILS – A project that engaged local communities with the visit to Sunderland of the Tall Ships Race. Groups worked with artists to produce fabrics, banners, artwork and even a replica viking boat! More here http://theculturalspring.org.uk/event/set-the-sails/

BITE-SIZE THEATRE – four new pieces of theatre were delivered at community venues in South Tyneside, including a pub and a football ground. Read more – and see our video – here http://theculturalspring.org.uk/event/bitesize/

SOUTH TYNESIDE PICTURE BOOKS – We worked with five local artists and five local primary schools, we produced seven picture books based on stories and drawings from pupils. Read more and see our great video here http://theculturalspring.org.uk/event/south-tyneside-picture-book/

2019:

HEART OF THE HOUSE – a joint commission with The Customs House, to mark their 25th anniversary as an arts venue.  Read more and see our video here http://theculturalspring.org.uk/event/heartofthehouse/

We also delivered several research and development projects and our Your Art support for local organisations wanting to start or explore delivering arts activities. We also continued to organise our popular Go and See visits, enabling local residents to explore events, festivals and arts activities further afield.
