Get writing this winter with a course of creative writing workshops and activities. Writer and tutor Amanda Quinn will encourage and support you to write with fortnightly online workshops and some simple creative exercises to do between sessions.

The course will focus on writing for enjoyment and relaxation and is ideal for anyone who would like to make time to be creative in their everyday life. All materials will be provided.

No previous writing experience required.

This course includes 10 workshop that take place fortnightly at the following dates/times:

  • Mon 23 Nov, 1-3pm
  • Mon 7 Dec, 1-3pm
  • Mon 21 Dec, 1-3pm
  • Mon 4 Jan, 1-3pm
  • Mon 18 Jan, 1-3pm
  • Mon 1 Feb, 1-3pm
  • Mon 15 Feb, 1-3pm
  • Mon 1 March, 1-3pm
  • Mon 29 March, 1-3pm

Due to the funding we receive, these workshops are for people living in South Tyneside and Sunderland.

All workshops will take place via Zoom. The quantity of tickets available indicates the number of ‘screens’ in the Zoom. Multiple members from households/support bubbles may attend as part of one booking on the same screen.

These workshops are offered by The Cultural Spring and subsidised by Arts Council England. To enable us to offer future workshop programmes we run a ‘Pay What You Can’ model for our workshops. This means they are free to attend, but if you are in a position to make a donation to support running costs this will be gratefully received. If you are not in a position to make a donation you are still most welcome to attend. We will provide more details about this later in the registration process.

BOOK YOUR PLACE

Rowan McCabe, known as the Door-to-Door Poet will deliver a series of workshops to prove that anyone can write poetry and that it doesn’t have to be boring.

Rowan’s workshops will be held via Zoom and start on Wednesday, February 3rd at 2pm and will continue for the following nine Wednesdays. The sessions will be an hour long and will be suitable for all adults of any ability. They will operate on a ‘pay what you can’ basis. If successful we hope to continue to support these sessions.

What will you do in these workshops? In the sessions, Rowan will be using a range of fun and exciting techniques to unlock your creative potential, making work that is unique and engaging.

These workshops are also supported by South Tyneside Libraries/The Word and are open to anyone resident in South Tyneside, if you’ve never written a poem in your life, or if you’ve been penning verse since you could walk these sessions are for you. Rowan wants to prove that anyone can write a poem and that it doesn’t have to be boring or cryptic.

“You can write a poem about literally anything, it could be something huge and political or small and seemingly insignificant. It’s all about using your own voice, not someone else’s.”

To sign up please register through Eventbrite and a zoom link and any materials you may need will be emailed to you. Please note these workshops are open to South Tyneside residents.

BOOK YOUR PLACE

Join Alex Henry and Dominic Smith for a quick hands on introduction to podcasting.

They will cover the technical side, including equipment and software as well as how to devise a podcast theme and structure a show. There will be a practical element where participants will learn how to record a conversation using online tools followed by a basic introduction to audio editing. The session will end with advice on how to get your show online.

You will need:

  • Please access the workshops on a laptop or a desktop rather than a tablet or smartphone.
  • A laptop / desktop with a built in microphone. If you have a separate USB microphone, that’s great but not essential for these sessions.
  • A pair of headphones

It would be helpful if in advance of the first workshop you could download audacity which is a piece of open source audio editing software, https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
